A good start

For once I was home the whole month of January (apart from a quick visit to London). It’s been nice, but the weather was so-so for my taste – very, very cold. Once again I confirmed that I’m not made for Nordic winters.

Being home it’s been quite interesting to follow the changes in the river running past the house. One evening it was just amazing to listen to the crackling ice. I wish I could record it for you all. I haven’t heard anything like it.

February is off to a very good start. Work is busy and interesting. Held a lecture at an event organized by the Embassy of Canada in Oslo on Wednesday and two days later I was at Cambridge University, holding a lecture at Judge Business School. The event in Cambridge was very rewarding. The passion, the interest, the curiosity, the participation, in general the vibe in and surrounding the different colleges is very inspiring and if I win the lottery something I would love to get better acquainted with. £50K is not something I just have laying around… :)

After a nice dinner with friends on Saturday night I enjoyed Oslo from its best winter side, cross-country skiing in Nordmarka with my dad and brother. On days like these I forget all about what I wrote earlier. It’s one of the best places to be. Sparkling white snow, bright sun a clear blue sky.

No pictures this time around, but I’ll make up for it in my next blogpost. In five days I travel again – going back to the more “natural” life of being here and there.

King winter has been kind

Less than a 20 minutes drive north of Oslo center you find Nordmarka, a haven for anyone with an inkling of the outdoors in his or her soul. Lakes and rivers surrounded by forested hills is the perfect backdrop for skiing of all kinds in the winter and fishing trips, hikes or a bicycle trip during the rest of the year.

Marka

Citizens of greater Oslo are very found of Nordmarka and spend a lot of time with open-air activities. Not surprisingly, Sundays are packed and on beautiful sunny days there almost queues on favorite paths. Today was not sunny, it was in fact quite the opposite, but with the heavy snowfall the past two days a lot had found their cross-country skis and set forth to many serviced cabins. It was very nice to ski with my father, brother, sister and her boyfriend earlier today. Now, a few hours later it feels well deserved to relax in the sofa – being very aware of my joints and muscles…

Marka2

The heavy snowfall has clad Oslo in a beautiful white blanket. Looking at the all the people struggling with their cars, I’m happy I sold the red one last month. I’m also very fascinated by the changes in the river running next to the house. The picture below is taken before I went to bed last night, around midnight. I used my compact (G10) and set it to a 15 second exposure. It’s amazing how much light the camera finds in the white snow. I have a plan of setting up a camera in the window, taking one picture at noon everyday. Maybe for a week, month or year, we’ll see how patient I’ll be.

Red is gone

The Ferrari red wonder Polo Cross is sold. I’m happy and sad. It will be missed, but happy for the money saved. Parked in a garage is not a good life for a red car anyway. Hoping it’s new life on the Norwegian west coast will be good.

Xmas and frames

Two weeks Christmas vacation was just what I needed. Spending time at home with family and friends. Time to exhale, read and relax.
There is definitely no place like home. =)

Xmas.jpg

For a long time I’ve been looking forward to this time. To finally have some extra time to go through the many digital photos I have left untouched on computer hard drives. But my home computer is getting old, too old, making it next to impossible to work with photography. So instead I picked up the box holding my film negatives. Taking the time to sort, categorize and store the thousands of frames properly was long overdue. Hopefully I can share a few in the not too distant future. In the mean time I take one step at the time completing my photo project. The ever-growing photo project….

Happy New Year!! 2009 is going to be great.

A walk along the river

A few weeks ago the new pride and joy of Oslo opened its doors. The new home of opera and ballet premiered with pomp, circumstance and a firework display not known to man north of Skagerak.
It is truly a magnificent building. Set in one of the dreariest places in town, it’s a white hope of what to come. I’ve seen the building plans and I can’t wait to see and feel the difference it will make to my dear hometown. It will be great… in ten years time.

What difference a little sunlight do. After a fairly grey winter we got the taste of spring last week. People were smiling, eating ice cream – I had one every day last week, I took my bike to work and all was well. The past weekend I followed the river running outside my house down to the city center. A 30-minute walk, and what a walk it is. Anyone visiting should join me for a stroll.

Three days east

Late again. A lot has happened since last time. Had the best intentions, but never found time. Plus all my photo equipment has been packed away, still is actually. Why? You’ll know a bit further down.

Had couple of good days in Beijing after my short visit to Seoul. After work hours I spent some off time at Pan Jia Yuan, the best market in town plus a visit to my personal favorite, 798. It changes every time – I know I’ve said it before – still great for photography. I’m through promising when I’ll have them ready for you to see. It will happen, one of those beautiful days.

Coming back to Norway my slate was full. Packing down the old house and moving into the new apartment. It’s awesome!!! Just love the place. In the city, by the river, surrounded by trees, high ceilings, huge windows, all the great things about a factory apartment and then some. Good times!

Today, a month after my visit to Beijing I’m back, in Beijing. Very short stay. Three days total. I can feel my biorhythm is screaming foul all the way back to Oslo. Oh well, had to go. It’ll be nice to be back in my crib though – catching the rays from my new plasma… =)

I did take one of my compacts with me – always bring a camera, regardless. So who knows, maybe I’ll update this post with a couple of images…

Færder’n

The weather was perfect. Sun, sun, sun. A gentle breeze and a fabulous weekend ahead of us. The Færderseilasen is the world’s largest overnight regatta, with more than 1100 boats taking part. A few professionals followed by a bunch of happy amateurs and of course a few dead serious not so happy amateurs. The four of us in “Villedagur” an Albin Vega built for leisure rather than speed were definitely not in the last group. Hardly even amateurs, but definitely happy =)

During the first two hours we managed to sail past quite a few boats. It went slow, we were all slow, but we were in the zone. We were sailing heroes – in my modest opinion. Then – nothing. Nada, njet, siltch. No wind whatsoever! The next five hours we didn’t move at all. If anything, we drifted backwards. We made a long boat race short, turned on the engine and drove down to the nearest port. We were back on land around midnight.

Waking up the morning after, we had a nice breakfast, looked at the boats still in the race passing us at very modest speed. My mother lives minutes from the port we spent the night, so we used the opportunity to say hi, take a shower and eat some ice cream. It was a lazy Saturday morning. It suited us fine.

Well rested we were back at sea. a nice breeze carried us down and out the Oslo fjord. Seven hours later we passed the finish line. It would have been nice to actually complete the race, but we did take some refuge in the fact that 70% of the starting boats reached the same decision we made, just much later into the night. I pity the fools…

We had no plans to win the race, but the banquet on Saturday night was within our range. 4-5000 people. Eating, drinking, lying about their boating skills, just having fun. And it was.

Slightly out of focus

I’m a tad jet-lagged. Returned late last night from a two-week trip in Asia. Had a busy, good time in Beijing and Seoul. I forgot to write my blog!! The horror… but fear not, I did take plenty of photos. And as usual, none are ready yet. All in good time, I hope I’ll have something to share before I head out again – which should be in two weeks or so, then due west.

Anyways. I saw a deer in my garden today. No kidding. Where it came from, I have no idea. I ran in, picked up my Leica and … no click, the battery dead after my trip. So all I have to share, after the battery was recharged, is a self-portrait took a bit later in the evening. Not all that easy to aim and shoot with an all-manual camera. It turned out slightly out of focus. How fitting.

A new beginning

Last weekend I finally had the chance look through the viewfinder of my new Leica and actually capture something else than the corners and walls at home, testing and getting a feel of the camera.

Making this blog I also thought I’d try a new way of presenting my photos on this page. Let’s see if it works. Hope so. The two images I’ve chosen to share are from last weekend, walking around Oslo with colleagues and friends from work. One photograph is from Huk, the tip of the peninsula, Bygdøy. The other is from the Vigeland Park in Oslo, a wonderful park displaying the life work for Gustav Vigeland.

I’m into a black and white phase at the moment – well, not really. Honestly I’ve always preferred black and white images. But I promise you. The images in my next post, after Easter, will be everything but shades of grey. I’m going on vacation. A vacation I hope will be filled with colors. =)

After the knife

Some of you know – a week ago or so I was under the knife and *snip-snip* my tonsils were gone. I was anxious the day before my visit to the hospital. What would it feel like when I woke up from the anesthetic?

In the early hours before surgery I was calm. It must be the marvelous personnel at the hospital. They are doing a fantastic job. It’s just too easy to forget, and a sad that you have to get ill to really appreciate it.

The operation went very well. Not surprisingly quite groggy when I woke up. My throat felt very raw and it was hard to utter a word. Painkillers en masse did the trick. Fell asleep fast again – very tired.

This week after the operation has been rather quiet. I’ve been sleeping – a lot. And when awake, popping painkillers and lying on the sofa, watching sports on Telly (alpine skiing and biathlon world championships – YAY).

The last couple of days I’ve been able to focus enough to read. And that’s my plan for the coming week. Follow doctors’ orders and relax as much as possible. And what better with a bunch of books.
